The Public Works Department will be sweeping Highway 18 starting Monday, November 4th, and is currently sweeping the entire town. Please remove all vehicles from streets during this time to help with sweeping.

Due to water tower maintenance all areas of town are affected with either no water or no pressure at this time. At this time water pressure is continuing to climb back to normal pressure. Once normal pressure has been reached all areas of town will resume having water and normal water pressure. Thank you for your patience at this time.

Rubble Site Winter Hours effective November 4th, 2024.

Water tower maintenance will take place Monday October 28th through November 1st. During this time water pressure may be low. Once maintenance is completed water pressure will resume too normal.

The Public Works Department has been placing orange reflective markers throughout the City, where there are divots in the road and or curb/gutter. This is to help ensure that these areas are not hit with the snowplows during the winter months. Please do not remove these markers, Public Works will collect the markers when the winter season is over.

REMINDER:
DECLARATION OF NUISANCE TREES AND ORDER FOR REMOVAL
To the owner of, occupant of, person in charge, or other persons responsible for the property. Pursuant to § 97.09 of the City of Canton Ordinances, any tree, sapling, or growth of Genus Fraxinus, commonly known as ash, located within the city limits of Canton, is declared to be a dangerous tree and a nuisance unless treated with Emamectin Benzoate on or before September 15, 2023. Removal of all untreated Genus Fraxinus trees, saplings, or growth of Genus Fraxinus located within the parking strips and boulevard within the city limits by the adjoining property owner is ordered to occur on or before November 1, 2024.
Removal of untreated Genus Fraxinus is necessary to preserve public health and safety and to prevent the spread of disease or insects to public trees and places.

Due to a hydrant being hit in relation to the project, there is no water at this time south of Seventh Street and Blair Street. Crews are currently working to fix this issue, and we apologize for any inconvenience.

Starting tomorrow (10/16/24), jetting of the sewer lines in the area south of Fifth Street and east of Main Street will begin. If you notice a strong smell in your house after jetting has been completed, please run water in ALL drains.

There is a gas main break at Ninth Street and South Pleasant Street. Please avoid this area at this time.

City offices will be closed Monday, October 14th in observance of Native American Day.

The City's bulk water salesman located at the City shop, where bulk water can be purchased for a quarter, has been fixed and is back to being operational.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakotans in Davison, Lincoln, Turner, and Union counties impacted by this summer’s severe storms have one week remaining to apply for federal disaster assistance. The deadline is October 15, 2024.
How Individuals can Apply for Disaster Assistance
Go online to DisasterAssistance.gov for English, or DisasterAssistance.gov/es for Spanish.
Use the FEMA mobile app in English or Spanish.
Call the disaster assistance helpline at 800-621-3362 anytime from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. seven days a week until further notice. Multilingual operators are available. Shorter wait times are more likely in the mornings or evenings. Anyone using a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, can give FEMA the number for that service.

Disaster Recovery Update
Since President Biden’s major disaster declaration for South Dakota on August 15, federal agencies have approved $13,970,610.76 in grants and loans to assist in recovery (as of Oct. 6). To date, a total of 1,370 people in Davison, Lincoln, Turner, and Union counties have applied with FEMA for assistance. FEMA has approved $8,440,710.76 through the Individuals and Households program, consisting of $5,734,872.33 in Housing Assistance for home repairs and rental expenses, and $2,705,838.43 in Other Needs Assistance for repair or replacement of personal property, vehicle repair or replacement, moving expenses and other disaster-related needs. In addition, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) has approved $5,529,900 in low interest disaster loans for homeowners, renters, and businesses.

CANTON ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION & EXP DEVELOPMENT BREAKS GROUND ON NEW 64-ACRE LIBERTY ADDITION HOUSING DEVELOPMENT IN CANTON, SD
CANTON, S.D. – Monarch Development Partners, LLC broke ground on a new 64-acre housing subdivision that has been in the planning stages for the past three years. EXP Development, the primary developer on the project, teamed up with Canton’s local economic development organization to bring a housing buildout that will bring much-needed single-family homes and multi-family units to the community.
“Canton Economic Development Corporation has been working on this project for the past three years and I am extremely proud to be part of the board that will be able to bring this development to fruition. This housing development will not only be beneficial to our local businesses, our school, but our but our entire community and help us grow for the future,” said Scott Larson, Board President of the Canton Economic Development Corporation.
EXP Development, the lead developer on the project is excited to be working in the Sioux Metro region and becoming a partner in helping to grow Canton. This development will include a single-family housing inventory of start-up, step-up and third tier housing options. There likely will be limited availability of ready build lots too. The multi-family options will include traditional units, along with potential ownership availability of select units. The buildout is being demand driven and as such will likely include an inventory of twin-homes, row homes, villas and more traditional builds.
