News Release
Use FEMA Grants for Intended Purposes
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – FEMA has provided $6.5 million to South Dakota residents to help recover from this summer’s severe storms and flooding. FEMA provides assistance for specific uses and encourages survivors to use the funds as intended and keep receipts to document how they were spent.
A letter explaining what the payment is to be used for arrives shortly after you receive the check or direct deposit payment. FEMA assistance is intended to help applicants pay for temporary housing if they are unable to live in their home due to disaster damage and for home repairs, or replacement of damaged or lost personal property.
If applicants spend the payment on anything other than its intended purpose, they may be ineligible for future disaster assistance. In some cases, FEMA may ask that the funds be returned.
Those receiving assistance are urged to keep receipts for their disaster spending for three years to document that the money was used to meet disaster-related expenses. If you receive an insurance settlement to cover the same expenses, you must reimburse FEMA. Audits are conducted to confirm funds were spent properly.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – South Dakotans who lost access to water through a private well or damaged septic system in Davison, Lincoln, Turner, and Union counties as a result of the severe storms, straight-line winds, and flooding from June 16 to July 8, 2024, may be eligible for FEMA assistance. For private wells and septic systems that supply water to your home, FEMA may reimburse you for the cost of a professional, licensed technician to visit your home and prepare an estimate detailing the necessary repairs or replacement of your disaster-damaged systems. In addition to the technician’s estimate, FEMA may also pay for the actual repair or replacement cost of your septic system or private well, which typically are not covered by homeowner’s insurance. If you have applied for FEMA assistance and have not had a home inspection, call the FEMA Helpline at 800-621-3362. At the time of your inspection, let the FEMA inspector know you have a private well and/or septic system that may have been damaged by the storms and flooding. If the damage is determined to have been caused by the disaster, you may be eligible for FEMA assistance.
If you have already had an inspection and damage to the well or septic system wasn’t reported, contact the FEMA Helpline to learn how to amend your application.

FROM THE 'DIVE INTO THE CANTON POOL' PAGE:
We’re excited to share some great news with you! We have advised us to perform a final load test on the pool and play structures. This is a vital step and a major milestone for our community to make sure everything is running safely and smoothly before the winter season and full open next summer.
To complete these tests, we will be hosting a pop public swim at the pool, and the general public is invited to come swimming today, Saturday, August 24th from 2pm-5pm. We have teamed up with the Inwood pool who is sending over guards and an EAP. Please know this is just part of our final checks to ensure the pool meets all safety and performance standards.
Temporary restrooms will be available, but no bathhouse, please come in your swim attire. We will have to limit capacity if we get to full, but if that’s the case, we will ask individuals to limit their time at the pool and we will clear the pool and let a new group in every hour. We will do this to ensure the optimal number of people get to test the new facility.
****release of liability waivers must be signed. Parents must be present and sign for individuals under 18.****
We will use the entrance located at the corner of E. 2nd St. and N. Kidder St.
You are welcome to bring lawn chairs and coolers with non-alcoholic beverages.
We appreciate your patience as we finish up these important steps. We can’t wait to fully unveil the new pool and provide a great experience for the entire community!
