Dakota Street Project

The City of Canton intends to reconstruct Dakota Street, an aging deteriorating  transportation corridor within the community.  In the coming years, approximately one mile of Dakota Street is planned to be rebuilt beginning at US Highway 18 (5th Street) and ending on 281st Street.  Some of the project improvements include:

  • New concrete street surfacing and curb/gutter

  • New sanitary sewer main expanding the sewerability of property along Dakota Street

  • New water main replacing older, undersized main resulting in increased water flows for drinking water and fire protection

  • New storm sewer  system reducing the amount of water on the street

  • Bicycle lanes to enhance connectivity between residential-school-business-recreational-regional properties

Chautauqua Park

In partnership with the Canton Rotary Club, the City is working to take advantage of a key asset in our backyard – the Big Sioux River. Recently completed, the Master Plan for Chautauqua Park details kayak and fishing access along the Big Sioux River, picnic shelters, nature trails, a 9-hole disc golf course and a bike path connecting to Newton Hills State Park.
